Discover Ankara's Roman era through the structures it left behind.
Beneath Ulus, the historic center of Ankara, lies the remnants of a great Roman city. However, archaeological excavations here are limited due to the presence of other cultural heritage sites above ground. This tour uncovers the visible, unearthed, and even hidden traces of Roman Ankara.
We begin our journey at the entrance to the Roman Theatre and Archaeological Park, where we meet our Professional Tour Guide. Here, we delve into the history of Ankara before and during the Roman period, gaining an understanding of this era.
The Roman Theatre is one of the most significant Roman structures in Ankara. While it does not stand as it once did in the Roman era, it is preparing to serve the city once again. After exploring the theatre and the Archaeological Park, we head toward the Hacı Bayram district.
Hacı Bayram Veli Mosque is undoubtedly Ankara's most iconic mosque, significant both for Hacı Bayram himself and for the magnificent Temple of Augustus, which shares its foundation. After visiting the Temple of Augustus, we proceed to view the remains of Cardo Maximus, the main street of Roman Ankara.
We continue to the Column of Julian, an emblem of Ankara, located near the former Ankara Governor’s Office. Here, we observe the underground remnants of the ancient road. Finally, we visit the Roman Baths, now an open-air museum and a well-preserved testament to Roman daily life.
The tour concludes at the Roman Baths, providing a deeper understanding of Ankara’s Roman history.
